Biodata of Mr. Shashi Tharoor (INC)
Born and brought up in London with family roots in Elevancherry village of Palakkad district. 53 years of age.
Author and former Under-Secretary General of the United Nations. Chairs a Gulf-based company Afras Ventures Limited and was the member of the director board of a foundation sponsored by Coca-Cola.
He serves on the Board of Overseers of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, the board of trustees of the Aspen Institute, and the Advisory Boards of the Indo-American Arts Council, the American India Foundation, the World Policy Journal, the Virtue Foundation and the human rights organization Breakthrough.
Dr Tharoor was educated in India and the United States, completing a PhD in 1978 at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where he received the Robert B. Stewart Prize for Best Student.
Dr. Tharoor has been appointed an International Adviser to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva for the period 2008-2011. He is also a Fellow of the New York Institute of the Humanities and the Patron of the Dubai Modern School.
has written 11 books.
Upon his election as Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram constituency, he was made Minister of State for External Affairs. However, he had to resign the post soon over allegations over a deal to bring IPL cricket to Kerala. He was re-inducted as Minister for Human Resources in 2012.
