Entered politics while student and joined the CPI (M) and CITU in 1974. Worked as Secretary, Birla Kortam Pulp and Fibre Workers Federation, Mavoor, up to 1979. Worked as contract worker and later as casual worker in Mavoor Rayon Gwalior Rayon's factory between 1979 and 1986. Jailed for one week during the agitation against the closure of Mavoor Gwalior Rayons Factory in 1985; participated in the march from Mavoor to Thiruvananthapuram, demanding reopening of that factory.
Elected as member of CPI (M) Kozhikode district committee in 1991 and Kerala State Committee in 2005.Held various trade union positions.
Elected to Kerala Assembly in 1996 from Beypore and became the Minister for Industries.
